SUMMARY:Geometry & Topology Seminar | Dominik Gutwein | The moduli space of
\nconically singular SU(3)-instantons
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DOMINIK GUTWEIN (UNIVERSITÄT HAMBURG) \n\n_The moduli space of
conically singular SU(3)-instantons_ \nInstantons over manifolds with spe
cial holonomy are a distinguished\nclass of connections on principal bundl
es. In their seminal paper from\n1998 Donaldson and Thomas envisioned inva
riants of special holonomy\nmanifolds based on the moduli space of such in
stantons. However\, a\nrigorous construction of these invariants faces for
midable challenges\narising from the possible non-compactness of this modu
li space. One\nsource of non-compactness comes from the formation of non-r
emovable\nsingularities\, that is\, a sequence of instantons might converg
e to an\ninstanton that is singular along a subset of the underlying manif
old.\nIn this talk\, I will focus on instantons over 6-manifolds with\nSU(
3)-structures that have isolated singularities of conical type. In\npartic
ular\, I will discuss their moduli space\, its structure\, and its\nvirtua
l dimension. This talk is based on joint work with Yuanqi Wang. \nMC 5417

CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:YUTONG DUAN (UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO)\n\n_Strong minimality of L
otka-Volterra system_ \nWe will begin with the notion of irreducibility fo
r differential\nequations\, introduced by Painlevé in his search for new\
ntranscendental functions\, and explain its relationship with strong\nmini
mality. We will then introduce the Lotka–Volterra system and try\nto sho
w that\, under certain conditions on the parameters\, its degree\nof non-m
inimality is zero\; by convention\, this means that its generic\ntype is m
inimal. Finally\, we will show that the resulting strongly\nminimal set ha
s trivial geometry\; moreover\, it is strictly\ndisintegrated. \nMC 5403

tence of Smooth Full-Holonomy Cayley Fibrations
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:VIKTOR MAJEWSKI (UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO) \n_Non-Existence of Sm
ooth Full-Holonomy Cayley Fibrations_ \nIn this talk\, I complete the proo
f that every Cayley fibration of a\ncompact torsion-free Spin(7)-manifold
with full holonomy must have\nsingular fibers. This confirms a long-standi
ng expectation in the\nstudy of calibrated fibrations with exceptional hol
onomy. Last\nsemester\, I showed that using the rigidity of the Spin(7)-st
ructure to\nreduce any hypothetical nonsingular Cayley fibration to two po
ssible\ntopological configurations. This time\, I exclude both by proving
a new\nspinnability theorem for smooth fiber bundles over simply-connected
\n4-manifolds with fiber homeomorphic to the elliptic surfaces E(2) or\nE(
4). The E(4) case\, which constitutes the main new difficulty\, is\nestabl
ished by combining families Seiberg–Witten theory with\nparametrized equ
ivariant homotopy theory and equivariant K-theory. \nMC 5417
