“The mean ergodic theorem, then and now”

The mean ergodic theorem, originally proved by von Neumann, was motivated by Boltzmann’s ”ergodic hypothesis”, and constitutes a cornerstone of classical ergodic theory.

We will begin by briefly tracing the time evolution of the mean ergodic theorem and some of its generalizations. We will then describe recent extensions of the mean ergodic theorem beyond its traditional confines, and present a sample of their diverse applications, some well-known and some new. These will include effective averaging in dynamical systems, bounds on the efficiency of quantum computational circuits, and some effective equidistribution results in number theory, as time permits.

The exposition aims to be suitable for a wide audience and the relevant concepts will be explained during the talk.
