“Model theory of tracial von Neumann algebras and the Connes Embedding Problem”

Von Neumann algebras play an important role in many areas of mathematics, including representation theory, knot theory, and measure theory. In this talk, we will discuss (tracial) von Neumann algebras from a model-theoretic perspective. We will also mention an intriguing connection between the Connes Embedding Problem (arguably the most important and difficult open problem concerning von Neumann algebras) and the existence of a model-complete theory of von Neumann algebras. All relevant notions from operator algebras and logic will be defined. Part of the talk will discuss joint work with Bradd Hart and Thomas Sinclair.

Refreshments will be served in MC 5046 at 3:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
