BA Therapeutic Recreation (2005), University of Waterloo
Lindsey is a Recreation Therapist at Grand River Hospital at the Freeport Site in the Specialized Mental Health Program. She transferred from Regional Mental Health Care, St. Thomas to Kitchener when the program first opened in October 2010 with the divestment of mental health services.
Lindsey supports individuals with a variety of mental health diagnoses; including depression, schizophrenia and dual diagnosis. Her role as a Recreation Therapist includes completing individual assessments and then working with the individual to assist in the facilitation of both individual and group based leisure interventions.
The Therapeutic Recreation degree opened doors for Lindsey right out of university. The Recreation Therapy positions she was looking for, specifically at the hospital, required a degree level of education. Combined with her co-op jobs, she was able to draw from a number of experiences to acquire a full-time position.
As an active member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) and the Therapeutic Recreation Association of Waterloo Wellington (TRAW), as well as being a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and holding the designation of registration with TRO (R/TRO), Lindsey hopes to share ways in which graduates can maintain and grow their connection and passion to the field of Recreation Therapy.
Lindsey’s advice for students looking to enter the workforce is to apply for anything! The way I was able to get a full-time permanent job was to do several contract positions first. Also, apply for positions that you think may be beyond your qualifications. Let the employer decide whether you are qualified for the position.
