About Religious Studies

For more than 50 years, the University of Waterloo has offered courses in religious studies. Religious Studies offers several plans for undergraduate students. Religious Studies is also a great complement to other plans where students can pursue a joint honours degree or a minor. The department also operates a Ph.D. program, unique in North America, specializing in religion and culture in North America.

Our faculty have varied research interests, with expertise spanning a wide range of topics. Religious Studies professors also contribute to other university departments and programs, including: Jewish StudiesSocial Development Studies, Sex, Marriage, and the Family, Fine Arts, Sociology, Peace and Conflict Studies, Beyond Borders, and Graduate Theological Studies.  

Our department enjoys the diverse resources of St. Jerome’s University, Conrad Grebel University College, St. Paul’s United College, Renison College, and the Faculty of Arts.

Our flexible program offers a wide variety of courses. You can specialize in three main areas:
