Language and Culture Corner

 

The Language and Culture Corner will serve as a free online space for students enrolled in Japanese, Korean and Chinese language courses at Renison and international students at Renison's partner institutions, to exchange ideas and discussion over language and culture.

International Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other language background students should be comfortable communicating in English, although having a proficient English language level is not required.

Language learners at Renison will be able to learn more about Japan, Korea, or China and practice their language skills.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Students enrolled in Community and Professional Education (CAPE) 
  • Japanese, Korean, and Chinese credit courses 
  • Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other language background students from Renison’s partner institutions
  • Students participating in the Language and Culture Corner will be placed into small groups, each with one to four international students and up to four CAPE and/or UW credit course students. Size of groups will be determined based on final numbers of participants.   

PROGRAM DATES:

Japanese  program:

Monday, January 31 to Friday, March 18, 2022 (6 weeks)

Korean program:

Monday, January 31 to Friday, March 18, 2022 (6 weeks)

Chinese program:

Monday, February 28 to Friday, April 8, 2022  (6 weeks)

Diverse groups program:

Monday, February 28 to Friday, April 8, 2022 (6 weeks)

DELIVERY:

Conversation group/teams

  • Students will be matched in teams and will be encouraged to connect with their groups on a weekly basis via zoom/teams, phone conversation, social media
  • Groups will be allowed to determine how they prefer to connect.
  • Discussions will not be monitored
  • Teams will be required to submit a weekly online log sheet outlining their hours and general discussion topics
  • Examples of discussion topics include ordering food at a restaurant, asking for directions, sharing things about their culture and country etc.
  • Groups will receive a list of discussion topics as a guide

PARTICIPANT ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CAPE & UW students:

  1. Commit to engagement in the Language and Culture Corner 
  2. Maintain weekly contact with their team for conversation practice and/or cultural exchange
  3. Submit a weekly online log sheet

International students:

  1. Commit to engagement in the Language and Culture Corner 
  2. Maintain weekly contact with their team for conversation practice and/or cultural exchange
  3. Attend the orientation session (confirmation will be sent to you after registration in program)
  4. Submit a weekly online log sheet

CODE OF CONDUCT:

I agree to commit to the following:

  • To meet with my group for 1-2 hours per week and maintain contact with my group regularly during the 6-week (Korean and Japanese program) or 10-week (Chinese program)
  • To notify my group (whether or not I can attend a meeting) and reschedule a new meeting with my group if I cannot attend
  • To create a safe and accountable online environment where personal boundaries and privacy of my group is respected
  • To complete the online end-of-term surveys promptly once invited to by the Renison International Office
  • To notify the Renison International Office immediately if there are any concerns
