About Religious Studies

Religious Studies is the academic investigation of how human beings make meaning, create values, and confront major life issues such as death, as well as the systems that result from such activities. Neither advocating for nor trying to dismiss religion and spirituality, Religious Studies seeks to understand and explain the roles and persistence of religious ideas, practices, and institutions in the ancient and modern worlds.

Who can take Religious Studies?

Culture and Language Studies offers a wide range of Religious Studies courses, including RS 115R Sex, Politics, and Religion in the U.S. and Canada, RS 170 Religion and Popular Culture, RS 275 Religion in Japanese Film, and RS 370 Atheism, Skepticism, and Free Thought. They’re perfect for students pursuing the Religious Studies major or minor, or for anyone seeking to expand their understanding of the diversity of human spirituality.
