About East Asian Studies
East Asian Studies (EAS) offers interactive and engaging learning environments for a deeper understanding of the languages, cultures, and societies of China, Japan, Korea, and the region as a whole.
Who can take East Asian Studies?
Students in any degree program can add an East Asian Studies minor to their university experience. Students not registered in degree studies may pursue the Diploma in East Asian Studies. EAS also houses our East Asia language courses. We offer a variety of options for non-native speakers interested in learning a new language, whether it be for personal, professional, or academic purposes. Students can receive a diploma in Chinese, Korean, or Japanese.
Rebecca began studying Chinese at Renison in her first year at Waterloo, and two years ago, she was awarded a scholarship for the Study in China summer program. This helped fund her six-week program that consisted of classes at a top Chinese university, plus 10 days traveling within China with an instructor. Rebecca and the other students were able to examine a living textbook of culture, art, food, and history. It even counted as a university credit!
Josh has a talent for languages, but he loves Japanese - in fact, Josh took part in an exchange to Japan last year, and says that the skills he learned at Renison were invaluable.
Ellis is excited to graduate and work with people from around the world, and her ability to speak, read, and write in Korean will make her stand out to employers.
