Interested in an exciting summer English language and cultural program at one of the top universities in the world?
Every summer, the University of Waterloo through Renison University College, offers a 4-week summer program, English for Success (EFS). EFS is a dynamic Canadian English immersion program that allows you to experience life in Canada while also getting an opportunity to meet both domestic Canadian students and other international students on the same world renowned campus. This program runs for three separate sessions; from June 4 - 29, July 2 - 27, and July 30 – August 24 so it can fit into your busy summer fun schedule. Throughout the duration of the EFS program, students will be in class for 25 hours a week learn listening, reading, writing, grammar, and speaking skills in multicultural environment. Waterloo draws students from all around the globe because of our reputation!
Do you want to experience what residence and campus life are like at a top-tier University?
Your all inclusive trip includes accommodation in one of our most popular residence buildings on the campus of Waterloo, at Renison! You’ll share a room with another student from another part of the world so that English is the common language!
You will also enjoy three hearty healthy meals while getting the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow students from your EFS program, other language programs at Waterloo, and students from all six faculties at the University of Waterloo living in Residence and studying for the spring/summer term. Renison’s dining hall has been voted one of the best hangout locations since it was designed to promote interactions with students from other language programs as well as from other academic programs offered at the University of Waterloo.
Do you want the opportunity to interact with domestic Canadian students while also having the opportunity to make new friends from around the world?
The opportunity to socialize continues after dinner when you will take part in a variety of activities of your choosing that will help you to not only improve your English language skills but also refine your leadership and team building skills. You’ll be working with your EFS peers as well as the vibrant and outgoing EFS peer leader team. The peer leaders have been carefully selected for their ability to promote interactions and provide hours of fun experiences in a multicultural capacity. These peer leaders are upper year students at the University of Waterloo who come from all six faculties. They are an inspiring and engaging group who’ve been carefully selected for this highly sought after international work experience. It’s been a long standing tradition to hire upper year students as we’ve been doing this for over 30 years! We are experts at designing meaningful activities that will keep you entertained and using your English language skills that you’ve learned in class. We have been refining these activities for over 30 years. Our history and traditions really makes our summer program stand out from all others!
Are you interested in potentially studying at Waterloo?
In the evenings you will often be involved in activities with students from other Waterloo Academic programs like the Bridge to Academic Success in English (BASE) program which prepares students to meet the demanding English Language Requirements of the University of Waterloo. As you know, the University of Waterloo is known to have the highest language requirements of any university in Canada. We require all students to have a 6.5 overall IELTS score and a minimum of 6.5 in speaking and a 6.5 in writing. The BASE students will be joining you for much of the same weeknight fun! Together you will see so many exciting places and take part in fun on campus activities. One day you could be zip lining through a forest, and then another day you could be sitting around a campfire snacking on marshmallows, listening to music and playing games designed to get you using your speaking and leadership skills! You will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.
Do you want to travel to Canada’s most popular tourist attractions?
You will also collectively take part in many of the fun weekend trips and excursions to Canada’s most vibrant tourist attractions. You will all the while be applying your English communication skills while enjoying these adventures of a lifetime with your new found friends from Canada and around the globe! You are truly immersed in a Canadian multicultural environment for the entire 4 weeks of your summer experience in Canada! Students will have the opportunity to explore Toronto’s entertainment district, located in downtown Toronto, and visit Niagara Falls, the most popular tourist attraction in all of Canada. As well, participants will get a chance to visit the CN Tower in Toronto, one of the world’s tallest structures, a place you would not want to miss. A trip to Canada’s Wonderland is also included, one of Canada’s biggest amusement parks. These are just some of the many exciting weekend destinations that you will get to visit during your four-week trip!
Do you want to meet not only international students but also domestic Canadian students?
You’ll get the opportunity to not only live among other international students from up to 15 different countries, but also the University of Waterloo students who are on their summer study term during their work-study sequence. Here at Waterloo, we have a unique work-study program where students alternate between study and work terms for up to five years in their undergraduate degree, which enables international students to pay for up to half of their tuition. This alternating work-study system ensures that there are always native English-speaking students on campus year-round This makes the environment at Waterloo truly unique!
International Social Volunteers will also join you on your trips. They are Waterloo students who want to support you, and have fun with you during your program activities. They have been trained to socialize with, and understand your transition to Canadian culture. They will be happy to help you practice your English conversation skills!

Waterloo has also hired a team of dons who are trained to offer support, guidance, and evening residential programming for the whole student body living in Renison’s residence. There is one Don for each of the 10 floors of residences at Renison. You’ll experience what university life is really like in Canada. The residence dons will really help you adjust to the Canadian lifestyle. Residence dons also facilitate activities like movie nights, ice cream socials, and water balloon fights to name a few. Students across all programs living in Residence can vote on their preferred activity, and there are plenty to choose from! There is always events happening each day, so students have multiple options. Best of all, there are no curfews, which means students have plenty of freedom to take part or plan an activity for themselves on or off campus.
