The Rev. Florence Li Tim-OiThe first woman ordained a priest in the Worldwide Anglican Communion

Please join us in celebrating the life, achievements and legacy of The Rev. Florence Li Tim-Oi.

A choral Eucharist will be held at St. James Cathedral in Toronto to mark the occassion.  All are welcome to attend.

The Eucharist will be celebrated by The Rt. Rev. Linda Nicholls, Area Bishop for Trent Durham (Diocese of Toronto) and The Rev. Canon Dr. Judy Rois will be the homilist.

Florence Li Tim-Oi's exemplary conduct as a priest helped pave the way for the ordination of women in the Anglican Communion.  Renison University College continues to support the continuation of her work and memory through a memorial reading room and holding her archives in the Lusi Wong Library.

Her story

In World War II, Li Tim-Oi had been serving as a deacon in the Anglican Church in China. At the request of her bishop, The Right Reverend Ronald Hall, and having travelled for ten days by bicycle and boat through Japanese controlled territory to get to the selected church, she was ordained a priest in 1944.

This ordination wasn’t without controversy, however. There was significant pressure on Bishop Hall from other bishops around the world to rescind this ordination. As a result, Li Tim-Oi decided to voluntarily give up her license to practice as a priest while still maintaining her ordination to be valid and intact. It was only after China’s Cultural Revolution and time spent in forced labour ‘Re-education’ factories that she moved to Toronto in 1983 and was once again licensed and began to practice as an Anglican priest. She served the people of her community in the Diocese of Toronto until her death in 1992.

In recognition of her bravery and dedication to her role as an Anglican priest, Anglican parishioners and clergy alike are eager to attend this service of celebration. In addition to the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada (the head bishop of the Anglican Church of Canada), Anglicans will be attending from the Dioceses of Toronto, Niagara and Huron which cover a geographical area as far north as Algonquin Park, as far east as Brighton, ON and as far south as Windsor.

The service will also celebrate the role of ordained women in the Anglican Church.
