Youth Social Action Retreat
An overnight experience for Grade 11 students who excel in the social science
The Youth Social Action Retreat is an overnight learning experience for carefully selected Grade 11 students. Your teacher has chosen YOU as a participant! This event will bring 50 of the top social science students to Renison University College at the University of Waterloo, so you’ll be surrounded by peers who share similar interests and leadership traits. Experience university life and take part in workshops led by community leaders in social change.
There is no cost to attend this event, but you are responsible for providing your own transportation to/from Renison. Participants are scheduled to arrive at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 12 and leave at noon on Sunday, May 13. Your parents are encouraged to come in and meet our team on “move-in day” before they leave. Participants will be given meals, accommodation, and full supervision during their 24-hour stay at Renison. There will be 25 students per residence floor, with one fully trained resident Don living on each floor and available during all hours of the event. Staff and faculty will be on-site for all workshops and events.
What are the goals of this program?
Reaching out into the community is important to Renison for a variety of reasons. We want to help foster students’ interest in the social sciences, teach them tangible tools and skills for creating positive change in their communities, and highlight career paths that exist in the social science field.
Who can attend?
You must be a Grade 11 student nominated by your social science teacher. If your teacher has nominated you for this opportunity, please fill out the form and check out a sample schedule for the weekend.
Please note that spaces in this program are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend that you reserve your spot as soon as possible. The final date to register and submit your supporting documents is Friday May 4, 2018.
