Longtime friend and donor to Renison University College, Rita Lee-Chui, made a significant gift to Renison in 2007, by donating her art collection to the College. At the time she made the donation, she laughingly told Caroline Tanswell, Director of External Relations, that this was Renison’s nest egg, to be used when she was no longer with us.
Lee-Chui had long supported the College in a variety of ways, but notably through the establishment of the Florence Li Tim-Oi Memorial Award, and the gift of the Florence Li Tim-Oi Memorial Reading Room and the Florence Li Tim-Oi Memorial Archives, both in Renison’s library. All three were named in honour of Lee-Chui’s sister, The Rev. Florence Li Tim-Oi, who was the first woman in the world ordained an Anglican priest in 1944.
When Lee-Chui passed away in 2016, at the age of 101, Tanswell began the process of auctioning the paintings to support student initiatives at Renison. In October 2017, two paintings by sought after Chinese artist, Da’Chien, were sold at auction through Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, realizing just over $396,000 (CAD).
Renison’s Board of Governors made the decision that the proceeds of the auction should used to support the Renison International Travel Fund and to rename the fund in honour of Lee-Chui, in thanks for her lengthy and substantial support of Rension University College.
The newly renamed Rita Lee-Chui International Education Fund will support international programming and travel and is a fitting tribute to someone who has given so much – through donations, support, and encouragement – to the College’s mission.
