Japanese food and culture lessonA note from Professor Michiyo Uchida
On December 3, JAPAN 272R had a Japanese food culture and table etiquette class. The students enjoyed a typical Japanese dish for dinner - teriyaki chicken bento.

Did you know that "Washoku" Japanese cuisine was added to UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2013? In Japan, making the best use of various ingredients available during a given season such as rice, vegetables, and seafood, is very important. Rice is the foundation of Washoku, and Japan's culture of rice cultivation started around three thousand years ago. During the class, we also had an opportunity to talk with the student from Soka University in Tokyo, Japan via skype about popular food amongst young people in Japan.

In this course, Japanese Culture and Society, not only did we learn about food culture and table etiquette, we also studied Japanese traditional and pop culture, language, technology, business, and lifestyle. I hope the students are able to practice and apply what they have learned in this course in their daily lives and use for their future career.
