Ideas start at the University of Waterloo, and the Office of Research helps convert ideas into opportunity.

The Office of Research is the university's central point connecting scientists on campus or associated with Waterloo to opportunities for funding and a variety of services, including commercialization. Office of Research staff support researchers through the many phases of research including ethics review and managing funds.

Research is an integral and intensive area at Waterloo. In 2017-2018, Waterloo attracted more than $224 million from public and private sources to fund research across a spectrum of challenges. Waterloo's strength in research excellence is supported by partnerships with industry, creating opportunities that generate new knowledge and further Canada's economy.

    The Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (CABHI) has funded a joint research venture involving researchers from the University of Waterloo and Grand River Hospital.

    With support from Southern Ontario Water Consortium, Waterloo researchers and local data mining company Pattern Discovery Technologies have partnered to develop a novel water hydrant monitoring system.

  3. Oct. 11, 2018Researchers discover that antidepressants can treat Alzheimer's Disease

    Scientists at the University of Waterloo have discovered that antidepressant medications can be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

    The study, recently published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience, found that selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRI medication) can delay the development and growth of amyloid-beta proteins, which can clump together and form a plaque, contributing to disease symptoms.
