University of Waterloo develops new way to fight HIV transmission

Scientists at the University of Waterloo have developed a new tool to protect women from HIV infection.

The tool, a vaginal implant, decreases the number of cells that the HIV virus can target in a woman’s genital tract. Unlike conventional methods of HIV prevention, such as condoms or anti-HIV drugs, the implant takes advantage of some people’s natural immunity to the virus.

Researchers find new way of exploring the afterglow from the Big Bang

Researchers have developed a new way to improve our knowledge of the Big Bang by measuring radiation from its afterglow, called the cosmic microwave background radiation. The new results predict the maximum bandwidth of the universe, which is the maximum speed at which any change can occur in the universe.

Partnership leads to aviation e-learning course

While many industries today are facing decline, the commercial aviation industry faces a different challenge. According to a recent study by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a projected increase in airline passengers is expected to double the size of the industry over the next 20 years. However, there aren’t enough aviation professionals trained or in training to meet that demand. In response, a Waterloo professor has partnered with ICAO to offer a free aviation course that’s available to anyone anywhere in the world.
