NDRIO Inaugural Funding Opportunity

The New Digital Research Infrastructure Organization seeks to bridge the gap between the three DRI pillars (i.e., Advanced Research Computing, ARC; Research Data Management, RDM; and Research Software, RS). In keeping with NDRIO’s values, the IFO also seeks to build a culture of collaboration and integration across the DRI environment in Canada. Therefore, the IFO will be open to proposals from all research disciplines, and with strong encouragement for inter-provincial collaborations and multi-disciplinary partnerships. Applications in digital humanities, social sciences, indigenous research and/​or other research areas underutilizing the national DRI will be strongly encouraged. Genome Canada: Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP)

The GAPP aims to: Accelerate the application of Canadian genomics-derived solutions from academia to real-world opportunities and challenges defined by industry, not-for-profit and public-sector Receptors; Channel Canada’s genomics capacity into sustainable innovations that benefit Canadians; Enhance the value of Canadian genomics technologies by de-risking and incentivizing follow-on investment from industry and other partners; and Foster mutually beneficial collaboration and knowledge exchange between Canadian academia and technology receptors. CIFAR Global Call for Ideas: The Future of Being Human

Global Call for Ideas is soliciting proposals for new CIFAR programs related to the future of being human. New program proposals should explore the long term intersection of humans, science and technology, social and cultural systems, and our environment. They invite bold proposals from researchers at universities or research institutions that ask new questions about our complex emerging world. Registration Deadline: August 27, 2021.

Canadian Glycomics Network (GlycoNet)

  • Clinical Partnerships: offer clinicians and biomedical researchers opportunities to partner with Network Investigators to study glycans or glycosylation changes in disease. This partnership would increase clinician awareness of the role of glycomics in disease, and expand glycomics translational research and its application in more problems of clinical importance. Partnership outcomes could be better understanding of disease, drug development strategies, or new drug targets. Deadline: August 31, 2021.
  • Translational Grants: areas of focus are neurogenerative diseases, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, in particular diabetes & obesity, genetic diseases involving errors in glycan metabolism, and cancer. A key goal of GlycoNet is the translation of research advances into novel products for treating disease. This Request for Proposals seeks to fund more mature projects needing Network support to de-risk and advance them to a state at which translation is possible. Deadline: August 31, 2021.
  • Strategic Initiatives: areas of focus are neurogenerative diseases, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, in particular diabetes & obesity, genetic diseases involving errors in glycan metabolism, and cancer. A key goal of GlycoNet is the translation and commercialization of research advances. This Request for Proposal seeks to fund partner-led projects that address needs of the pharmaceutical of biotechnology industry. Deadline: August 31, 2021.
  • International Partnerships: GlycoNet has formalized a partnership with Academia Sinica to co-fund collaborative research between two entities. These grants fund projects that involve at least two groups, one in Canada and one in Taiwan. GlycoNet will fund research conducted in Canada, while Academia Sinica will fund research conducted in Taiwan. Projects require at least a 1:1 matching and must be completed within 12 months. Accepted on a rolling basis.

NSERC PromoScience

NSERC's PromoScience Program offers financial support for organizations working with young Canadians to promote an understanding of science and engineering (including mathematics and technology). PromoScience supports hands-on learning experiences for young students and their teachers. Grants may be used to cover improvements to program content or delivery, as well as for new programs and activities. Grants can also be used to cover operational costs such as salaries, travel, postage, materials and supplies, provided that they relate to the promotion of science and engineering. Application Deadline: September 15, 2021 by 8 PM ET.

Edith Lando Charitable Foundation

The Foundation focuses on the Lower Mainland of B.C. and is generally not open to proposals from other countries. Projects must be from officially  recognized charities. We are open to all types of programs, but particularly welcome projects where we feel The Foundation's support really makes a difference, though we do support major organizations as well. The Foundation has supported a wide range of projects such as teacher training, the development and expansion of specialised programs in schools. The foundation has also backed projects combatting child abuse, bullying, and encouraging child development and welfare. The average amount of the grants is $5,000, though we have also given much larger amounts for other outstanding causes that we choose to support. Application Deadline: September 30, 2021.

Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy: Social Science Grants

This opportunity is available to graduate students of pre-docs. The purpose of this grant is to support emerging scholars through small grants; promote scholarship with a social policy application; and encourage projects that address contemporary issues in the social sciences. Social Science Research Council (SSRC) – USA: Democratic Anxieties in the Americas Research Grants

The Social Science Research Council invites applications for its democratic anxieties in the Americas research grants. This supports proposals from across the social sciences and related fields that address the challenges facing democratic societies across the Americas. Keys themes are: political representation, political participation, and inequalities; and judicial politicization and the judicialization of politics. Anticipated Application Deadline: May 9, 2022.

Microsoft: AI for Humanitarian Action

Microsoft has committed $40 million over five years to support nonprofits and humanitarian organizations working across these areas:

  1. Disaster response: We support resiliency, response, and recovery programs designed for those affected by humanitarian emergencies.
  2. Refugees and displaced people: We provide scalable solutions to help the approximately 79.5 million forcibly displaced people, including refugees.
  3. Human rights: We partner with organizations to accelerate breakthrough solutions that help monitor, detect, and prevent human rights violations.
  4. Needs of women and children: Our projects help ensure the wellbeing and safety of women and children around the world.

The broad purpose of these funds is to encourage Canadian academics to undertake projects to help create a new strategic direction for the accounting profession by informing CPA Canada’s Foresight Initiative (see below for more information). The research under this program need not lead to publication in a scholarly journal, although it may lead to one or more such publications. The research project may result in a report that is both useful to practitioners and provides background in an area that could be the subject of further academic exploration

Imagining Canada’s Future Ideas Lab: Canada and the Circular Economy

This is a new pilot funding opportunity for scholars from all disciplines who are interested in developing innovative solutions to global challenges in collaboration with others. In the ICF Ideas Lab, researchers from across Canada will come together in a virtual workshop to address the global challenge of Living within the Earth’s Carrying Capacity with a dedicated focus on “Canada and the Circular Economy.” At the workshop, participants will form research teams and develop ground-breaking project ideas with the potential to inform policies and programs addressing the needs of diverse sectors throughout Canada. Following the workshop, teams with the most promising project ideas will be invited to apply for funding; up to 3 grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded by March 2022, for two years. Deadline: July 16, 2021 at 8 PM Eastern.

Transport Canada Rail Safety Improvement Program

The ITR component of the Rail Safety Improvement Program (RSIP) funds rail safety improvements that support measures to improve public safety at rail property and rail lines (both federally and provincially regulated). Funding is also available for research as well as testing and development of technologies that can enhance the safety of rail lines (both federally and provincially regulated). Deadline: August 1, 2021.

SSHRC Aid to Scholarly Journals

Aid to Scholarly Journals grants respond to the objectives of the Connection program. They support Canadian scholarly dissemination by offering a contribution to enable journals to explore innovative activities as well as to help them to defray the costs associated with publishing scholarly articles, digital publishing and journal distribution on Canadian not-for-profit platforms. University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center Primals Research Award

The University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center, with support from the Templeton Religion Trust, is pleased to announce the Primals Research Awards. Our goal is to promote new empirical research exploring how primal world beliefs (‘primals’) are formed, maintained, change, or influence nontrivial outcomes or psychological processes. As recently introduced, primals are basic perceptions of the general character of the world as a whole, such as the world is dangerous and the world is interesting, that correlate with many behaviors and wellbeing-related variables. Independent Electricity System Operator
