The WHMIS 2015 transition period is now complete. Following a regulatory amendment that will enable a cost-effective and simple labeling process, the Safety Office is now commencing relabeling across campus.
Relabeling will involve the addition of a workplace label to containers bearing WHMIS 1988 labels. Existing supplier labels are not to be removed, however modification to WHMIS 1988 pictograms will occur. To ensure that relabeling is done according to WHMIS 2015 compliance requirements, the Safety Office will work with individual labs to provide the degree of assistance necessary to relabel their chemicals. We will help to identify applicable containers and provide WHMIS 2015 compliant labels.
We will be contacting departments to arrange this in due course, so laboratories must have their chemical inventories up to date and be prepared to have lab personnel ready to work with Safety Office staff. Minimizing the time to reach compliance is key, therefore we will be moving through this process as efficiently as possible.
Visit the Safety Office's chemical inventories page for more information on updating chemical inventories.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.
