Purpose

To provide individuals in a research environment knowledge on using a chemical’s properties to understand what harm it may cause and how it may cause harm. With this information, the individual will then be able to implement appropriate controls to reduce any risk of harm that exists.

Any individual that needs to work with chemicals in a research environment.

  • Recognize which chemical properties are important to understand before using a chemical
  • Use knowledge of these chemical properties to predict what conditions to avoid
  • Identify the factors in a work process that contribute to chemical exposure
  • Utilize the General Laboratory Assessment worksheet to guide assessing risk in a research setting
