Be prepared

Something that surprised me about the requirements for the Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) program was that you do not need any previous knowledge of accounting or finance. The requirements to get into AFM are a minimum of 75% in grade 12 U level English, advanced functions, and calculus and vectors. I learned that the academic requirements would prepare me with the knowledge required in AFM courses; however, I am still concerned that I do not have the opportunity to take accounting and finance related courses in high school. My worries were put at ease when I learned that all professors assume their first-year students do not have any or very little knowledge of accounting and finance because not all schools offer accounting courses. Now that I know the requirements to get into the AFM program, I can take the prerequisite courses in grade 11 and 12. I was looking at taking accounting in grade 11 and 12 so that I would have the experience and will be more prepared in my first-year. Sadly, there aren’t any finance courses offered at my high school so I can’t take any to further prepare myself for the program, but I can certainly learn more on my own. If you’re in high school and starting to look into university, be sure to check out the requirements for any and all programs you are interested in, not just AFM and select appropriate classes to prepare yourself.
