Co-operative Education: An opportunity to travel, make money and gain real-life work experience

Hey, I’m Shan, a Master of Accounting (MAcc) student at the University of Waterloo. Back in 2016 when I started my bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Financial Management (AFM), I was eager to explore Canada. I felt that my program’s co-op work terms would provide the best opportunity to fulfill this dream. I remember in 2018, I applied to all small cities and secluded spots for my first co-op work term. Although it was scary at first, the idea of exploring new places has always fascinated me.

It was because of this that I landed in Kenora, Ontario for my first co-op, and it was there I did something I've never done before - ice-fishing! Truly, the beauty of Kenora cannot be described in words. For my second co-op work term, I switched things up and experienced the fast-paced life of Toronto, Ontario. For my third and fourth co-op work terms, I decided to accept a placement in Calgary, Alberta so I could explore beautiful Banff, Canmore, and Chestermere on the weekends.

The joy I experienced working in various cities across Canada increased as I made friends that shared the same values, and as I was exposed to different cultures. In addition, I was able to grow as a person because I became much more independent, and my problem-solving skills increased as I had to figure out travel logistics often.

I would recommend to anyone who has caught the travel bug, to go the same route as I did in my undergrad!
