hEDGE 2012 hailed outstanding success

hEDGE 2012, an undergraduate capital markets conference organized by students at University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) was hailed as an outstanding success by industry professionals, student delegates, and faculty.

The conference, which was held on August 23rd and 24th in Toronto’s financial district, provided undergrad students from across Canada with a holistic view to the sell-side and buy-side of finance,focusing on the five cross-pillar areas of the capital markets: asset management, equity & debt research, private equity, investment banking, and sales & trading.

The two-day event hosted seven high profile keynote speakers, including:

  • Jacqui Allard, Global Chief Operating Officer & President, Manulife Asset Management Canada
  • Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher, Deputy Chief Investment Officer, Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo)
  • Peter Myers, Executive Managing Director and Head of Investment & Corporate Banking, Canada, London & Melbourne, Bank of Montreal (BMO) Capital Markets
  • Patrick B. Meneley, Vice Chair and Executive Vice President, Global Investment and Corporate Banking, Toronto-Dominion (TD) Securities
  • Robbie J. Pryde, Vice Chair and Executive Vice President, Head of Equities, TD Securities
  • Avery Shenfeld, Managing Director and Chief Economist, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
  • Craig Shepherd, Managing Director, Risk Strategy, Global Banking & Markets, Scotiabank

Participants were also given the rare opportunity to network with a pool of 100 students delegates from nine universities in Ontario including the University of Waterloo, Queen’s University, Western University, University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University.

Professor Tom Scott, SAF’s Director, congratulated the student organizers for establishing a great conference in record time. “We were impressed by the quality of the events and the impeccable execution - overall, delegates found the conference extremely rewarding,” says Professor Ranjini Jha.

According to the event organizers, the conference has seen “unprecedented growth and interest since its inception in 2011” and is now “one of Canada’s leading undergraduate finance conferences.” The organizing team was headed by Jonah Hu with:
