Michael Blake, Oni Prisecaru, and Rocken Wong
The University of Waterloo placed 2nd overall in the Ben Graham Centre’s 2016 International Stock Picking Competition on April 12, 2016. Master of Accounting students (from left) Michael Blake, Oni Prisecaru, and Rocken Wong were the only team to pitch a “buy” to the judges, prompting quite a few probing questions at the 2016 Ben Graham Stock Picking Competition.

The competition’s mission is to promote the “Benjamin Graham” style of investing, referred to as “Value Investing” which he coined in the early 1930’s. Value Investing is a strategy of selecting stocks that the market has undervalued.

Finance Professor, Rajini Jha echoed the terrific performance, based on their unique take on the stock. “[They] knew the firm and the subsector in depth and responded well to questions. Compared with the other two teams who pitched no-buys, [their] presentation stood out.”

SAF students had one week to prepare their stock analysis on Publicis, a French multinational advertising and public relations company. Priscecaru, Wong, and Blake were hard pressed for time as they were writing MAcc final exams every day of the week leading up to the competition.

School of Accounting and Finance Director, Tom Scott, reached out to the team to congratulate them. “Great job! I was amazed when I remembered that you had prepared all of this while having to do exams immediately before. We are certainly proud of you.”

All three students sat on the Student Run Investment Fund for multiple terms and applied their experiential, project, and presentation based learning to place second in this international competition.
