We are proud to announce that five students from the School of Accounting and Finance have won the CFA Institute Research Challenge Local Competition (provincial level) and will be proceeding onto the Regionals (North American level)!

Congratulations to Sophia Chen, Judy Dong, Thinisha Gunasekera, Raj Patel, and Talha Siddiqui, who will each receive a $1,000 prize and head to Seattle, Washington this April.

"Even prior to working on the CFA team together, we all knew each other through the School of Accounting and Finance’s Student-Run Investment Fund," notes Sophia. "By working on a team together, we were able to play to each person's strengths and we learned a lot from one another. We all had different co-op experiences, and we were all able to draw from what we learned on those terms."

This is University of Waterloo's second consecutive local win and the fifth overall since the Society started this initiative in 2010. Last year's SAF students competed against stiff competition and were the second Canadian team to win the Americas Regionals level of the challenge, and the first Canadian team to be global champions of the competition.

"I am amazed by the quality of young, bright minds that have stepped forward for the 2017 competition. As well, we would not have been able to accomplish this without the incredible support from our [CFA Institute Research Challenge] Industry Mentor, Jeannine Li Chong." Steve Balaban, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Mink Capital and CFA Society Toronto volunteer.
