The SAF was proud to have two teams represent us in the Battle on Bay competition held at Ryerson University. One of those teams, comprised of Aili Huang, Helen Hu, Yushu Yang, and Sean Zheng were a dynamic force at the event and won first place for a prize of $3,000!
The competition, which took place from January 15th-16th, was a unique and intellectually challenging opportunity, allowing top undergraduates to compete and develop their skills in financial strategies, financial modeling and pitching. The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Finance in the Automotive Industry’, chosen because of Canada’s standing as the 8th largest auto industry in the world and the huge role this plays in our economy.
Top industry professionals including the President and CEO of Hyundai Canada and VP Auto Finance at BMO were present to judge the competition, as well as to network with the aspiring financial analysts.
It was almost like a strategy case – we identified three main trends of the auto industry and supported them with a qualitative and quantitative analysis. We then focused heavily on the implications that these trends have on the auto finance industry. We found the materials that we learned in our strategy and case finance courses at SAF extremely helpful. The case structure and planning that we learned in class were very applicable and helped us tremendously with the crisis case on the second day of the competition. - Helen Hu
The SAF would also like to extend special congratulations to Helen Hu for winning the MVP Award commemorating her spectacular presentation skills!
