CPA CFE Honour Roll

Graduates from the School of Accounting and Finance programs dominate in the area of accounting education. Each year, SAF graduates demonstrate their expertise in the accounting field by excelling in the CPA Common Final Exam (CFE).

The CFE is the culmination of CPA’s rigorous accreditation process that includes important accounting disciplines such as finance, governance, strategy, and assurance. Additionally, the CFE evaluates professional skills that are in demand within the field such as critical thinking, professional judgement, decision making. The CFE Honour Roll consists of the top one per cent of successful CFE writers.

SAF is extremely proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our Honour Roll candidates and to all of the successful candidates from the school. Qualifying to become a CPA is a very challenging process. We hope the resulting career is rich in rewards and opportunities, and we wish our graduates all the best in their future endeavours!

2016

The SAF is excited to congratulate Sanly Li on being the top CFE writer in the province for fall 2016! She joins Matthew Roman, another SAF grad who won the same award earlier in 2016.

A recent grad of the Master’s of Accounting program, Sanly currently works at KPMG LLP in Toronto. When asked why she chose a career in accounting, she responded: “I went into business and accounting aiming to be a CPA because the designation opens the gateway to many opportunities and enhances my future prospects".

2015

The Common Final Evaluation (CFE) written in September, was the national three-day evaluation that assessed the competencies of accounting graduates. The CFE is an important component of the new CPA qualification program, which assesses proficiencies in essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics and the ability to communicate. In 2015, Ontario had 782 of the country’s 2,218 successful CFE writers, and 20 Ontario students placed on the prestigious 52-member National Honour Roll. Of the 20, over half of them were University of Waterloo, School of Accounting and Finance alumni.

2014

Akash Kapoor of Waterloo's Master of Accounting program (MAcc) won the prestigious Governor General’s Gold Medal and the Ontario Gold Medal for achieving the highest standing in Canada on the UFE. The UFE gold medal is one of the many achievements in Akash's academic career. In 2012, Akash was named the Arts Co-op Student of the Year for developing a tool that created efficiencies, saving 6500+ administrative hours. The tool was integrated into the employer’s polices and is now used all over Canada.

2013

Nicholas Tsai (MAcc '13), revealed some of the factors that gave him an advantage when writing the Chartered Accountancy Uniform Final Examination (UFE). Tsai attributes part of his achievement to the exceptional camaraderie that he encountered at the SAF. “The students are always willing to help one another,” he says, “and grads tend to get significant guidance and advice.”

His co-op experiences also played a major part in his success on the UFE. “Over my four co-op terms, I gained valuable insights that helped develop my problem solving strategy, which benefited me on the final exam,” Tsai explains.
