The Sustainability Specialization is typically best-suited to be paired with another Specialization, but can work well if you are interested in using your remaining electives to explore other areas of academic interest at uWaterloo. The aim of the Sustainability Specialization is to familiarize you with environmental issues and how they affect industries and business decision- and policy-making. As an accounting and finance professional, there are opportunities available to those who are eager to help make these decisions and to assess and communicate their impact, not only in terms of their financial impact, but also their impact on our social and physical environments.
If you are interested in driving change in the world by helping corporations or governments understand and improve their impact on society and the planet, consider electing the Corporate Sustainability or Government Policy path within the Sustainability Specialization and pairing it with the Professional Accounting or Financial Leadership Specialization. If you are interested in professional services, such as assurance or consulting, you may want to consider pairing this Specialization with the Public Accounting Specialization and aiming to work on client engagements involving performance/impact reporting or a range of other sustainability-related initiatives. If you are interested in investment management or the fast-growing world of social or impact investing, consider electing the Capital Markets or Corporate Sustainability path within the Sustainability Specialization and pairing it with the Financial Markets Specialization.
