Office 365 email migration

This page provides instructions on what to do to get your email working after the migration from Connect ("on-prem") to Office 365 (Microsoft cloud) email. Note that for these instructions, "userid" is your eight-character (or less) UW userid.

Web access

Old: connect.uwaterloo.ca

New: outlook.office365.com; OR login on the Office 365 sign-in page and click the "Outlook" symbol on the left menu.

Outlook for Windows

  • Shut down Outlook and restart it again. You should be prompted to log in once Outlook restarts.

  • At the bottom of the first dialogue (it will say "Work or school account" or "Personal account" - ignore these) click "Sign in using a different account."

    • The field will auto-populate with "nexus\userid". That format will not work. Delete it and replace it with the format youruserid@uwaterloo.ca

    • Enter your WatIAM password.

Outlook for Mac

  • Launch your Microsoft Office for Mac Outlook client. 

  • After Outlook is launched, click on Tools > Accounts. 

  • Delete the current account following the steps below.

    • Highlight your account, then click the minus button (-) in the bottom left corner.

    • Confirm your deletion by clicking on "Delete."

  • Once removed, you’ll be brought back to the Accounts window, click on the button for Exchange or Office 365. 

  • Enter your primary email address in the "E-mail address" field. 

  • Enter youruserid@uwaterloo.ca and your WatIAM password. 

  • Make sure "Configure automatically" is checked, then click "Add Account."

  • Check the "Always use my response for this server" option and click the "Allow" button. 

Outlook for mobile phones

Microsoft recommends removing and re-adding the account associated with Outlook on your phone. These instructions are provided by Microsoft:

To delete the account 

  1. Start the Outlook app. 

  2. At the top left, select the menu icon, tap "Settings."

  3. Tap the account you would like to remove/delete. 

  4. A new window will appear. Tap "Delete Account." 

  5. A small menu will appear, tap "Delete."

  6. Fully quit the application. 

To re-add the account 

  1. On the Welcome Screen, click "Get Started."

  2. On the "Get Notified" screen, you have the option to turn on or off app notifications. This is according to your preference. 

  3. On the "Add Account" screen, enter the email address of the account you are configuring. 

  4. Enter your account name in the following format: youruserid@uwaterloo.ca

  5. Click "Add Account."

  6. Enter your WatIAM password on the Office 365 sign-in page and select "Sign In." 

  7. If you use 2FA, click through the prompts to authenticate. 

  8. Your account will be added to the Outlook app. 

  9. You will be prompted to add another account if you wish to do so.

Apple Mail for iOS

1. Delete your account from Apple Mail:

  • Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  • Open the entry for your UW email account.
  • Click "Delete account" at the bottom.
  • Click "Confirm" when the dialogue pops up.

2. Add an Office365 email account to Apple Mail:

  • In Settings > Mail > Accounts, click "+ Add Account."
  • Enter your email address in the format youruserid@uwaterloo.ca
  • Enter your WatIAM password when prompted.
  • Click "Sign in."
  • Choose a 2FA method to complete the authentication.

Other platforms

If you want to add the new Office 365 account to a platform that is not listed above:

  • First, try youruserid@uwaterloo.ca and your WatIAM password.
  • If you are prompted for manual settings, use these:
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
    • Domain: uwaterloo.ca
    • Username: youruserid@uwaterloo.ca
