The R: drive is a filespace that allows for on-campus departments to house folders with content shared amongst a custom user list. R: drive folders are generally only for staff use and are created for Science staff upon request to Science Computing.

How to map your R: drive folder
Nexus Workstations
On Nexus workstations, if you have access to an R: drive folder, the R: drive should be mapped for you automatically. You will have to find your folder on the list.
If the R: drive does not map automatically, or if you would like a mapping that goes straight to a particular folder, you can map your R: drive folder by hand using the instructions below.
To map your R: drive folder from off-campus or wireless on-campus, you will need to install and connect to the Campus VPN.
You will then be able to map your R: drive folder using these instructions:
Windows users
- Open "File Explorer" and highlight “This PC” from the left menu.
- At the top of the window, from the "Computer" tab select “Map network drive.”
- Select the drive letter from the drop-down menu (R: is recommended for simplicity, however, any letter will work.)
- In the "Folder" field enter: \\filed.uwaterloo.ca\science$
- There will be two check boxes:
- "Reconnect at sign-in": If this box is not checked the R: Drive will have to be mapped everytime the computer is rebooted.
- "Connect using different credentials": If this box is checked, credentials other than the default ones can be used. If you are not using a Nexus machine, check this box as it will not work otherwise.
- When prompted enter your network credentials:
- Username: yourWatIAMuserid@uwaterloo.ca
- Password: yourWatIAM password
- Optionally select "Remember my credentials" if you don’t want to have to enter your credentials every time you access the folder after a reboot.
- Click "OK."
Mac users
- Open Finder
- From the “Go” menu, select “Connect to server.”
- "smb://fileD.uwaterloo.ca/science$"
- Enter your network credentials:
- Username: yourWatIAMuserid@uwaterloo.ca
- Password: yourWatIAM password
- Optionally select "Remember my credentials" if you don’t want to have to enter your credentials every time you access the folder after a reboot.
- Click "OK."
