Biosensors and nanomaterials: a scientist's journey from fundamental science to creating value to society

My research programme is centred on a fundamental understanding of interactions in large molecules. In this talk, I will present some research results, and how we created value from the scientific knowledge from this research. I will then present a generalization of the process of translating science to society, how to translate scientific discovery to technology and products that we do in the Impact Centre, with students as the conduits of knowledge transfer. I will show examples of our student-led companies.
As a scientist, Goh works on nanotechnology, biomaterials and biodiagnostics. She has expertise in the translation of scientific discovery to technology and products, and in the training of scientist-entrepreneurs. She has co-founded 6 companies including Axela Inc and Vive Crop Protection. She originated a training program for entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurship 101, at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, which has thousands registered annually. In 2010, she introduced Techno, an intensive training program for scientists to build tech-based companies; this has led to the creation of over 100 start-ups based on university research.
