A few years ago, world talk was all about massive oil shortages. Now, no one talks about this; it seems that the world is awash in oil. Where did all this oil come from? There appears to be far more producible oil in the ground than was thought just 5-10 years ago. Large quantities of oil and gas in low-permeability rocks, called shales, have been identified, especially in North America.

Technology is not a fixed resource: it is advancing continuously. Horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing (fracking) are now being used to develop oil and gas resources trapped in low-permeability rock formations. These technologies are also being applied to redevelop old fields around the world to unlock more oil from these mature reservoirs.

We will look at how oil is formed, why there is so much in Canada, Venezuela, and the Persian Gulf, and discuss the ongoing impact of technology development on available oil resources.
