storybooks on the grass

Celebrate Science Literacy Week with Let's Talk Science and the Earth Sciences Museum by joining our online Science Storytimes! We will read a story and follow up with an investigative science activity using simple materials you've collected. The stories and activities are suitable for kids in Grades 1-3, but younger children may still enjoy the experience with the help of an adult.

Each day's story and activity starts at 10:20am and will take between 45 minutes and an hour. You can register for one story or all of them! After you register, we will send you the list of suggested materials for the activity. The daily Zoom link will be sent around 8:30am. For privacy, attendee cameras remain off throughout. We will open the chat during the activity for questions.

  • Monday, September 19: Welcome Home Bear (Gr.1-2, 45 min.): Not too deep, wet, dry or steep! In this science storytime, a bear is looking for a new place to live but needs everything to be just right. After a reading of a book, students will help different animals find a place to live by matching them to their environments in a game of animal BINGO!
  • Tuesday, September 20: What Floats in a Moat (Gr. 2-3, 60 min.): Time to set sail! In this science storytime, students follow the adventure of Archie the goat and his friend Skinny the hen as they try to figure out the best way to cross a moat without sinking. After the book reading, students will explore the different properties of solids and how they relate to buoyancy in water by building and testing out their own boats.
  • Thursday, September 22: Water Cycle Adventures. (Gr 3, 60 min.): The water cycle never ends...but why? Help us answer this question and build your own water cycle tower. Afterwards, join us in reading Wally & Deanna's Groundwater Adventure.
  • Friday, September 23: One Dog Sleigh (Gr. 3, 60 min.): Oh what an adventure! In this book following a child and her dog, all kinds of forces that cause movement are at work! Gravity and friction can be their friends or their foes as they ride their sleigh through the forest on a snowy winter’s day. Students will then build their own sleigh to participate in the ultimate sleigh building contest!
