Katelyn - Environmental Science

Science Ambassador

Year: 3

Stream of study: Co-op

Specialization: Ecology

Career goal: Not sure yet, waiting to see how five terms of co-op go first! Maybe a master's in agriculture or any job that has me outdoors and in the lab! Hands-on work makes me really happy, so either sounds good.

Favourite food: Rib-eye steak (medium rare)

How I get involved: Other than Science Ambassadors, I volunteer with the University of Waterloo Federation of Students (Feds) Student Food Bank, Science Orientation, and Let's Talk Science!

Why I love my program

What I love about environmental science is that it’s so interdisciplinary and hands-on! In my program we build a foundation in biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics through the lectures and the labs. Studying the environment with a perspective from a variety of scientific fields developed my understanding of the earth as a system. I love being able to connect concepts between different branches of science and apply my knowledge to experiments. The combination of working in the laboratory and out in the field is definitely one of the best things about my program!

Why University of Waterloo?

I chose Waterloo because I believed everything they offered here at the university would be the best at preparing me in starting my career. Choosing a co-op stream would allow me to explore different possibilities and gain hands-on experience in the field. Being able to take courses specific to my program in my first year would give me that opportunity to start learning relevant material immediately, and eventually focus towards a specialization. The university’s dedication to innovation by supporting student endeavours and success inspired me to choose Waterloo and hopefully one day contribute something innovative too!
