Science Ambassador

Melissa throwing her ringette ring up in the airYear: 4

Stream of study: Co-op

Career goal: My current career goal is to work in industry in the biotechnology field. Along the way to that goal, I am hoping to do graduate school in a molecular biology/ biotechnology related field.

Favourite food: My favourite food is mac and cheese but homemade, not KD.

How I get involved: I get involved on campus through science and business mentors and science ambassadors. In addition I am a member of the first ever University of Waterloo Ringette team. I've also played soccer, hockey and volleyball intramurals. Off campus, I coach a U19AA ringette team for the city of Waterloo.

Why I love my program

I love Biotechnology/ Economics because it allows me to challenge myself analytically from both an economic and biotechnology perspective. With economics added onto my science degree, it helps me approach scientific problem with a clearer idea of how it might work for a businesses and the decisions that have to go into it from an economic standpoint.

Why University of Waterloo?

I chose the University of Waterloo because the unique opportunities that I hoped co-op would give me, along with the academic reputation. Through co-op I got to move across the country, work in fields from marketing to molecular imaging research and gain extremely valuable work experience so I would say my decision paid off.
