Senate Membership Composition

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO

SENATE MEMBERSHIP

[Adjusted pursuant to section 18 of The University of Waterloo Act, 1972]

This memorandum is effective 31 January 2016 and will be updated as necessary.

Pursuant to sub-paragraph 18(a)(9) of The University of Waterloo Act, 1972 (the “Act”), Senate has the power by bylaw to add ex officio members of Senate in addition to those named in paragraph 18(a) of the Act as originally passed.  When such power is exercised by Senate, paragraph 18(c) of the Act requires that membership of other named constituencies represented on Senate be adjusted as well, so as to maintain the membership ratios among constituencies established in paragraph 18(b) of the Act as originally passed.

Over the years since the Act was passed in 1972, Senate has exercised the power outlined in sub-paragraph 18(a)(9) on several occasions, and has adjusted constituency ratios accordingly, such that the membership of Senate as at 31 January 2016 is as follows:

Recognizing the requirement in sub-paragraph 18(b)(2) of the Act that faculty representation on Senate must be equal in number to one more than the total number of all other members of Senate, and recognizing as well the requirement in paragraph 18(c) to maintain original constituency ratios as additional ex officio members are added by bylaw, we check the legitimacy of the current composition of Senate as follows (allowing for some rounding):
