University Risk Management Program

The University of Waterloo has developed a unique University Risk Management (URM) Program. Officially initiated in 2015 through the adoption of Policy 11 - University Risk Management, the URM Program is an organic, evolving vision of an institutional risk management framework. Some tools are in use, and some are currently being developed to facilitate this endeavour.

The URM Program means more than the traditional risk management view that risk is always negative and a thing to minimize. We call it "University" rather than "Enterprise" Risk Management because we approach the management of the University's key business risks and opportunities with the intent of enabling the University's goals as set out in its Strategic Plan.

The URM Program is institutional-level and overarching. For more information on front-line risk managing activities, please visit the links on the rigth hand-side of this page for representative examples.
