SUMMARY:Legal Studies Seminar - Defending Jews from the Definition of\nAnti
 semitism
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This article\, forthcoming in _UCLA Law Review_\, examines the
legal\ndebate surrounding antisemitism in the context of Israel criticism
\,\nchallenging definitions that equate such criticism with antisemitic\ns
peech. It argues that current legal definitions impose a narrow\,\nZionist
-centric view of Jewish identity\, harming both Palestinian\nadvocacy and
Jewish pluralism. Jewish identity is inherently diverse\nand contested\, w
ith this ongoing debate viewed as a vital feature of\nJewish tradition.\n\
nThe article traces the evolution of antisemitism's legal definition\,\nfo
cusing on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)\nworking
definition. To counter the harms of this definition\,\nthe article propo
ses a novel legal framework\, arguing that\ncriticizing Israel can be an e
xercise of religious freedom for many\nAmerican Jews and that antidiscrimi
nation laws should protect Jews\ntargeted for their political positions.\n
 \nReinterpreting U.S. constitutional protections to safeguard the\nplurali
ty of Jewish identities offers a new understanding of religious\nliberty t
 hat allows Jewish communities—and potentially\nother groups—to determ
ine how religion and politics intertwine in\ntheir identities.  \n\nABOUT
THE SEMINAR SERIES:\n\nThe Joint Legal Studies Seminar Series features bi
annual seminars\nshowcasing a range of legal studies scholarship.  The se
ries is\nhosted by the Departments of Sociology and Legal Studies at the\n
