Please note: the competition has a limited availability of 100 students and the teams will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Who may participate?

ASA DataFestTM at the University of Waterloo is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo. Students are encouraged to form teams of 3 to 5 individuals with diverse background and skills from different disciplines.

Each individual in a team must submit a separate registration by Friday April 16, 2021, and include the team name on the form.  In case a student is really interested to participate but has not formed a team, he/she will have the chance on the registration form to request placement onto a team.

What is ASA DataFest?

The American Statistical Association (ASA) DataFest is a celebration of data in which teams of undergraduates work around the clock to find and share meaning in a large, rich, and complex data set. This year's Datafest will be held virtually.

A key feature of ASA DataFest is that it brings together the data science community. Undergraduate students do the work, but they are assisted by roving consultants who are graduate students, faculty, and industry professionals. Many professionals find ASA DataFest to be a great recruiting opportunity–they get to watch talented undergraduate students work under pressure in a team and examine their thinking processes.

Math BallonsAfter two days of intense data wrangling, analysis, and presentation design, each team is allowed a few minutes and no more than two slides to impress a panel of judges. Due to the event being held virtually this year, teams will be responsible for submitting a recorded video of their presentation. Each individual in the winning teams will receive a CASH prize, upwards of $2,500 per team, applied to their Quest account. Prizes are awarded for;

  • Best in Show
  • Best Visualization
  • Best Use of External Data
