Running Parallel in R on your Laptop and on Cluster Computers

The Programming with Big Data in R (pbdR) project (see pbdr.org) aims to teach and simplify parallel programming in R and to harness parallel numerical libraries relevant to statistical computing. This is an expanded version of a talk I give at the 44th Annual Meeting of the SSC earlier in the week. I begin with a very brief overview of parallel computing platforms and introduce the pbdR project. Then I go through several examples, including some, where parallelism is introduced directly in R and some, where parallel numerical linear algebra libraries are engaged on partitioned data.
