SUMMARY:Department seminar by Kris Sankaran\, Quebec Institute for Artifici
 al\nIntelligence
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:NAVIGATION AND EVALUATION OF LATENT STRUCTURE IN HIGH-DIMENSION
AL DATA\n\n-------------------------\n\nIn the modern data analysis paradi
gm\, fitting models is easy\, but\nknowing how to design or evaluate them
is difficult. In this talk\, we\nwill adapt insights from graphical statis
tics and goodness-of-fit\ntesting to modern problems\, illustrating them w
ith applications to\nmicrobiome genomics and climate systems science.\n\nF
or the microbiome\, we show how linking complementary displays can\nmake i
t easy to query structure in raw data. We also find novel visual\nsummarie
s that inform model criticism more deeply than data splitting\nstrategies
alone. We then describe how artificial intelligence can be\nused to accele
rate climate simulations\, and introduce techniques for\ncharacterizing go
odness-of-fit of the resulting models.\n\nViewed broadly\, these projects
provide opportunities for human\ninteraction in the automated data process
ing regime\, facilitating (1)\nstreamlined navigation of data and (2) crit
 ical evaluation of models.
