SUMMARY:Department seminar by Guillaume Saint-Jacques\, Linkedin
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:FAIRNESS THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION: INEQUALITY IN A/B TESTING AS
 AN\nAPPROACH TO RESPONSIBLE DESIGN\n\n-------------------------\n\nAs tech
nology continues to advance\, there is increasing concern about\nindividua
ls being left behind. Many businesses are striving to adopt\nresponsible d
esign practices and avoid any unintended consequences of\ntheir products a
nd services\, ranging from privacy vulnerabilities to\nalgorithmic bias. W
e propose a novel approach to fairness and\ninclusiveness based on experim
entation. We use experimentation because\nwe want to assess not only the i
ntrinsic properties of products and\nalgorithms but also their impact on p
eople. We do this by introducing\nan inequality approach to A/B testing\,
leveraging the Atkinson index\nfrom the economics literature. We show how
to perform causal inference\nover this inequality measure. We also introdu
ce the concept of\nsite-wide inequality impact\, which captures the inclus
iveness impact\nof targeting specific subpopulations for experiments\, and
show how to\nconduct statistical inference on this impact. We provide rea
 l examples\nfrom LinkedIn\, as well as an open-source\, highly scalable\ni
mplementation of the computation of the Atkinson index and its\nvariance i
 n Spark/Scala. We also provide over a year's worth of\nlearnings -- gather
ed by deploying our method at scale and analyzing\nthousands of experiment
s -- on which areas and which kinds of product\ninnovations seem to inhere
ntly foster fairness through inclusiveness.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This seminar
will be given online through Webex. To\njoin\, please follow this link:
