GreenHouse students set their sights on sustainable solutions

ChangeRoom team

Given the growing impact of climate change, building environmentally sustainable products and services has become more important than ever before. So, it comes as no surprise that GreenHouse (GH) students continue to build ventures with a sustainability focus. Whether it’s a product or service to help you consume more sustainably, or an idea to support existing businesses transition into a more sustainable business model.

We took the time to catch up with two of the winners from the most recent Social Impact Showcase, ChangeRoom and Sup Zero, who focused their ventures on sustainability for social impact.

GreenHouse students are often asked, “What’s your why?” The question invites emerging social entrepreneurs to figure out what change they truly want to make, and from there to determine the best way of doing so.

One in a million

Aileen learning about her acceptance to Next36

Ever since GreenHouse alumna Aileen Agada began her venture BeBlended – a company focused on the black hair care industry –  she has kept a notebook in which she jots down every idea and possibility that occurs to her. But soon, Aileen might need to add a few extra pages to that notebook.

For many black women, simply walking into a hair salon to get their hair done is not an option. This was the experience that Aileen Agada had in Ottawa while away on a co-op term. It turned out, she had to ask community members where they got their hair done and the same response always happened, “a friend of a friend, of a sister in their basement.”

You don’t need a 'Big Idea' yet – just build off your interests

Alex Wong

At our Social Impact Showcase, St. Paul’s GreenHouse purposefully focused on showing that GreenHouse really can be for anyone, no matter what part of your journey you’re at – from nothing but ambitions, to seeded ideas, to ventures running at full speed.

We all entered at different stages and many are now leaving (cue tears) at different stages.

Alex's Blog: The Fear and Power of DO

Alex Wong
I entered GreenHouse with the intention of doing something - anything. I read and I think and I talk a lot - but never before have I taken real action.

Amy's Blog: The power of networks

Amy Liou

As hinted, I have been asked before how I, as a student, can have so much energy to work on multiple tasks without burning out. Truth is, I do burn out. A lot. And I have experienced more stress than I should have in the past few months.

"I’ve learned, however, the importance of teamwork, and having a team working with and supporting me to achieve goals."

Amy's Blog: Diving into the startup world

Amy

I describe this week as my dive into the startup world. Not only was I working on my own startup, I was also training as a social entrepreneur to work for other local enterprises through the GreenHouse co-op program.
