Request for Proposals for WAEC logo

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

The Waterloo Aboriginal Education Centre (WAEC), located at St. Paul’s University College at the University of Waterloo, is seeking to develop a visual representation, in the form of a logo, to represent the Centre. The final logo:

  • should connect with students, the Aboriginal community, and the University of Waterloo community
  • must be suitable for multiple Aboriginal communities
  • must be congruent with St. Paul’s brand identity
  • should work well within the University of Waterloo communication context
  • needs to work well in print and online materials

The WAEC officially opened in its current location in 2011, although it was known as Aboriginal Services for 4 years prior to that. The WAEC provides culturally relevant support to University of Waterloo students, staff, and faculty, and runs several programs, such as an annual traditional Pow Wow, a high-school information and career-readiness conference for Aboriginal youth across Ontario, and weekly Soup and Bannock days.

St. Paul’s offers residence, academic courses and learning opportunities to students at the University of Waterloo. The College’s purpose is to support the University of Waterloo community by providing a unique learning environment that educates social innovators to shape a just and humane world.

The WAEC has been using a logo (see below) that was developed many years ago by an unknown designer. The logo has served us well, but with the recent growth and changes in the Centre, we are seeking to renew the logo, as well as align it more with the St. Paul’s logo (also below).

The process should be collaborative and consultative. Starting with a discovery meeting, the designer will meet with key stakeholders from the WAEC, St. Paul’s, and the people it serves to gain input to inform the design process.

We envision a first draft of several potential themes/ideas to be evaluated by the WAEC/St. Paul’s team. From this, a direction will be chosen from which the designer will submit draft logos. We will then be seeking external consultations and feedback on these drafts. The feedback from these consultations will be used to select and refine the final concept. The final artwork will be approved by the St. Paul’s University College Indigenous Advisory Council.

Please provide the following in your proposal:

  1. A description of how you plan to approach the project
  2. Samples/portfolio of your work
  3. Evidence of the firm/business being 51 percent Aboriginal owned and controlled to correspond with the Government of Canada’s Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Business
  4. A quote and timeline
