Statement Regarding the Discoveries at the Marieval Indian Residential School

Friday, June 25, 2021

The faculty and staff of the College join people across the country in expressing their condolences to the members of Cowessess First Nation and to all who have been harmed, directly or indirectly, by Canada’s system of residential schools. The discovery of approximately 750 unmarked graves on the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School is a bitter sequel to news that emerged from Kamloops two weeks ago. While the discovery of even one unmarked grave is too many, it is certain that further discoveries will be made in the coming months at other sites across the country. We again call on all relevant parties to implement the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action as an essential step toward reconciliation and justice.
