The University of Waterloo Stratford Campus participated in the Canadian Open Data Experience which ran from Friday, February 28th to Sunday, March 2nd, 2014. The event featured a Master Class, Inspiration Day Program and a 48-hour Hackathon.
To open the 3 day-long event, renowned Data Scientist, Hilary Mason, conducted a Master Class in big data at the Velocity Residence.
Inspiration Day Program
Mason travelled to the Stratford Campus where she spoke on the impact of big data and the need for its creative interpretation through data visualization. Co-presenters Nadia Amoroso and Haim Scheter of DataAppeal shared best practices for creative mapping and discussed how to enhance the visual display of information to make it more understandable and effective in day-to-day decision making.
The day concluded with the launch of the first nationwide Open Data Hackathon in Canada – the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE). It was an intense 48 hours with 8 teams participating and competing alongside 900+ individuals from across the country.
