CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:\"Building Equitable and Sustainable Game Development Education
\"\nWorkshop led by Kenzie Gordon (University of Alberta)\, Dr. Sean\nGoug
las (University of Alberta)\, Dr. Alison Harvey (York\nUniversity)\, Vish
al Sooknananl (Western University)\, Dr. Johanna\nWeststar (Western Unive
rsity)\, and Dr. Jennifer Whitson (University\nof Waterloo). \n\n  With
recent waves of layoffs\, high-profile workplace harassment\ncases\, and
a notoriously short career length for gender minorities and\npeople of col
our\, the transition of new workers into the game industry\ninvolves navig
ating a spate of barriers to equity and success that\nhave been understudi
ed in academic research. The First Three Years is\nan ongoing longitudinal
study of graduates of game programs in Canada\nand the United States\, fo
llowing the journey of 207 students as they\nmove into the game industry.
In this workshop\, our research team will\nsummarise the primary challenge
s students have identified in their\ngame programs. This summary includes
equity and diversity issues\ninherent in common curricular practices such
as the efficacy of\ncapstone courses and internships\, the inclusion of cr
unch-like\npractices in the classroom\, the systematic failure to inform s
tudents\nof actual workplace conditions\, and the mismatch between student
 \npreparation and industry hiring practices. Afterwards\, participants\nwi
ll address whether/how these problems manifest in their own\ninstitutions\
, and what solutions might improve equity outcomes for\nstudents seeking c
 areers in games.

SUMMARY:Critical Tech Talk: Black Media Philosophy and Beyond with Armond R
 .\nTowns
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Much of the contemporary research on race in communication medi
a\nstudies begins with media representations. However\, for this talk\,\nA
rmond R. Towns will focus on the relationship between the modern\nresearch
university\, race\, and the development of communication and\nmedia studi
es in the early and mid-twentieth century\, with a focus\nspecifically on
US and Canadian communication and media studies. Like\nthe modern universi
ty\, the discipline of communication and media\nstudies\, Towns argues\, h
as a difficulty with understanding non-Western\nlife. This talk is a begin
ning conversation on how to push toward new\nforms of understanding humani
ty beyond Western life. The topic of who\ncounts as human is crucial in a
context where big tech aims to control\nthe future of so-called humanity a
nd the AI race closes the gap\nbetween human and machine communications.\n
\nThis is a hybrid in-person and virtual event. Following the talk\,\nther
e will be a short reception for in-person attendees at the Science\nTeachi
 ng Complex (STC) Room 0050.
