U.S. Department of Education - Direct Loans
The University of Waterloo is listed as an eligible international institution with the U.S. Department of Education and we are currently working on the ability to participate in the disbursement of funds through the U.S. Department of Education's Direct Loan Program beginning in the Fall 2020 term.
Ineligible programs and courses
The U.S. Department of Education does not provide funding to students enrolled in:
- Any course which does not include an in-person component is ineligible for U.S. Federal loan funding including
- All distance education courses
- All distance education programs
- All co-op programs as they include a mandatory online component.
- Certificate, diploma, non-degree, and post-degree programs
- Exchange/Internship/study abroad programs at institutions not eligible for Title IV or US Direct Loans funding; see School Code Search on www.fafsa.ed.gov

Sallie Mae Student Loans
The University of Waterloo is set up to administer Sallie Mae loans. Please apply directly with Sallie Mae Student Loans.
Your private loan funding will be released in instalments each term. The funds are sent by cheque to the University of Waterloo and are made payable to the school and the student. You will be contacted to endorse the cheque in our office. The funds will be applied first to any fees outstanding and any resulting credit will be refunded to you by the Student Financial Services office.
U.S. Veterans Affairs GI Bill
The University of Waterloo is a Veteran Affairs approved institution to certify the VA Enrollment Certification form through the U.S. Veterans Affairs GI Bill.
Students must request certification for each academic term that they want to receive Veterans Affairs benefits.
Please submit your certificate to our office each term prior to the Fee Arrangment deadline. We can then provide information for submitting a promissory note.
