2016 Year End Wrap Up

year end wrap up image

December has begun, which means the year is beginning to wrap up. Exams are about to start, the weather has turned cold, and the prospect of a break from classes and assignments glimmers in the near future. To commemorate the closing of 2016, we are looking back on some of the awesome events that happened across campus in the past year.

Here are just some of our favourites:

Waterloo was ranked the number one school in Canada for Computer Science and Engineering.

It’s always exciting to place first in something, especially when it comes after a lot of hard work. The University puts a lot of effort into creating the best experience possible for its students and receiving a first place ranking from the US News' Global University Subject-area Rankings solidifies that our efforts are paying off.

The University of Waterloo and HeForShe celebrated the two-year anniversary of the IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative, and one Science student spoke during the anniversary event in New York City.

Anya ForestellNot only is the University of Waterloo the sole Canadian organization participating in the HeForShe campaign, but our students are also working towards the goals set out by the IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative and sharing their experiences with world leaders. It may only be the second anniversary of HeForShe, but already Waterloo is making great strides towards gender equality.

We welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to campus, and he praised the brilliant and innovative minds of our students on the World stage.

This year Justin Trudeau, visited our campus, announced major funding for the Southern Ontario Water Consortium and also name-dropped our school to world leaders and business giants. At the World Economic Forum in Davos he praised UWaterloo’s innovation and brilliance.

Velocity Start opened as a new space for entrepreneurship on campus.

Velocity StartAlready known for entrepreneurship on campus, Velocity dedicated another space on campus for students to create, innovate, and collaborate. We cannot wait to see what amazing ideas come out of Velocity Start.

There are now options for transgender students on University application forms.

Pride flag

This was only the first step to making transgender students feel more comfortable on campus. Since this article was published in the spring, buildings across campus have embraced gender-neutral washrooms so students can feel comfortable and in control wherever they are.

This is just a snap shot of some of the events that happened across campus in 2016, and man did we have a lot of awesome experiences. Going into the New Year, we can only assume that 2017 means more advancement in innovation, equity and more for our students and the University. We can’t wait to see what 2017 brings!
