Achieving the Freshman 15

Young people can gain so much from the university experience. A UWaterloo student is making the "Freshman 15" a meaningful gain that will help you during and after your time spent in school.

Micah Hesman is a Recreation and Leisure student living at Renison University College. He is a varsity athlete in Football and Track and Field, and also volunteers as the Warrior Academic Leadership Community (WALC) Peer Leader at Renison this term. His job is to encourage and lead the varsity athletes who reside in the college to excel with their sports and academics, and to be leaders within the community.

Micah created the program called Freshman 15 as a win-win for Renison students and athletes to participate in a fitness program together to create community, while also staying fit and improving themselves.

Freshman 15 is a fitness program that is led by Renison's varsity athletes, and available to anyone who lives in Renison. Monday through Thursday, a varsity athlete will be present at the PAC weight room in the evening. He/she is there to take attendance, and to give any guidance in terms of fitness techniques. Every other week, there are fun events ranging from gym nights, to having a professional come in and teach them new activities, ranging from martial arts or dance such as Krav Maga, or Latin dance. These events are integrated into the program so that the participants have something fun to look forward to.

The concept of the original freshman 15 is that first-year students come into university and gain 15 pounds of unwanted weight, but also represents first year students coming into university and struggling to stay on top of things. I want to turn it into an opportunity for first years to come into university and thrive in everything they do. - Micah Hesman

The original idea for this program was a fitness program for Renison, but Micah hopes to create something for the whole campus that encourages students to come into university and excel in much more than just academics.

If your department is interested in developing a Freshman 15 campaign, email Jonathan Collaton, Student Life Coordinator at Renison, to share your ideas.
