At the end of a study term, so many of us are looking forward to exams being over so we can start our summer. For some, that means heading off on a work term, while others are taking time off and some are already planning to stick around campus for another study term. Before you close the door on winter 2018 though, take the time to celebrate all you’ve accomplished this term!
Why not? All the hard work you put in to achieving your goals this term deserves some recognition.
Acknowledging your own successes with celebration reinforces a positive attitude for the next time you’re faced with overcoming new challenges. With that attitude, you can continue to look forward to accomplishing future goals and stay open to whatever might come next.
Celebration also provides a moment to pause and rest between goals. While the joy of one success can fuel future successes, no journey lasts long without stopping now and then to rest and refuel. Taking time to relax and savour a job well-done is also a form of celebration and self-care.
By taking a break, you can also take advantage of the time to reflect on your success and the tools you used to achieve it. Self-reflection is a prime opportunity to learn about yourself — what you took away from your experiences, what you want moving forward, what you think needs improvement — all these revelations are necessary to continuing to move forward to your next big goal.
Finally, in celebrating your success, you pave the way for others who see you to be inspired by you. It’s also a good time to show your gratitude to the people who helped you out along the way.
In short, here are some ways to celebrate this term:
- Treat your friends and the people who helped you! Have a good time, whether that means taking time to catch up on your Netflix queue or planning a group dinner out.
- Treat yourself! You earned it.
- Rest, refuel, and reflect! Set aside some time to relax and think about how you succeeded. What lessons have you learned? What challenges did you overcome that seemed impossible at the time? What have you learned to do differently next time?
- Let everyone learn from your experiences! Share your success story with the people who matter — and maybe with the rest of campus?
While we bid farewell to winter 2018, the sun will rise and the geese will honk on whatever comes next — and that’s always something to celebrate. Congrats Warriors!
