Competing for the $10,000 top spot

Emily WatsonA Chemical Engineering student ranked among 10 finalists in a biomedical research challenge this past weekend, competing for the chance to win a $10,000 grand prize.

Emily Watson presented as part of the Sunnybrook Research Prize Competition, an annual challenge that gives undergraduate students in physical sciences and engineering an opportunity to display their interest in biomedical research through written application and presentation. Emily presented her research project "Liquid-infused polymers utilized in urinary catheters” in the competition on January 9. Sounds pretty smart, right? The 3A student had 15 minutes to present to a panel of judges who asked questions about her research and later awarded $10,000 to the top finalist.

Emily found out about the competition by browsing the University of Waterloo Undergraduate Awards page, a great resource for students looking to acquire financial support for their education through means of scholarships, bursaries and awards. Emily found this particular competition under the external award opportunities.

Emily was on a co-op term at Harvard Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering when she started the project. She credits Dr. Howell and Thy Vu, employees at the Harvard Wyss Institute, for the research idea and was able to develop the story and experiments with the help of her supervisors.

Emily was fully prepared for her co-op term thanks to UWaterloo’s online pre-departure course. She was able to understand the entire process of going abroad and learned about topics like visa information and banking practices. This training was an asset to Emily while she was abroad.

Through her experience at Harvard, Emily was able to grow her skill set in ways that went beyond the classroom.

I learned how to search for and skim research papers very efficiently, I learned very sensitive lab techniques and I learned how to create a professional presentation. I hope to utilize these skills in the future. - Emily Watson
